About

Blackbird Early Years Music was created from a passion to provide the most positive start possible to children’s musical journey. Our aim is to provide a holistic music education and foundation for children, aged from 3-7.

Founded in 2014 by Helen Reid (former BBC Young Musician of the Year keyboard finalist), the Blackbird Early Years Music curriculum teaches basic musical concepts, such as rhythm, dynamics, pulse and pitch. However, the activities in our classes and curriculum also encourage communication, collaboration, creativity and confidence, among many other skills.

Our curriculum is full of original and fun activities, designed specifically for this age group, with songs specially composed for the curriculum by Dominic Sewell and Laura Trundle. Dominic has been commissioned by BBC 1 and 2, Channel 4 and English National Opera, among others, and he orchestrated the BBC’s Emmy-award winning Walking with Beasts.

Helen has a huge wealth of music educational experience, including work with children with special educational needs; workshops and concerts for babies and children; running children’s choirs; and completing a Master’s degree in Performance, in which she also explored the process of composing for children.

The original Blackbird Early Years Music classes were so popular that Helen began to train other teachers to run them, and following on from this success, has developed Music Resources for teachers and child carers to use themselves.
